Most Trane heat pump repairs in West Palm Beach run between $150 and $650, parts and labor included, and we can usually get a technician to your door the same day you call. If your Trane unit is blowing warm air, short-cycling, or making a sound like a playing card in bicycle spokes, you’re probably looking at a failed compressor contactor, a refrigerant leak, a dead capacitor, or a worn condenser fan motor. Those four parts account for the majority of Trane heat pump failures we see across Palm Beach County, and we stock compatible replacements for all of them on our trucks. Here’s what you need to know before you spend a dime.
The salt air in West Palm Beach is hard on heat pumps. We replace more condenser fan motors and contactors here than in any inland market, because the coastal humidity corrodes electrical connections faster than the manufacturer’s average lifespan numbers suggest. A Trane unit that would run 12 years in Orlando might need its first meaningful repair at year 8 in West Palm Beach. That’s not a defect. It’s geography.
Which Trane Models This Applies To
We service the full residential Trane heat pump lineup: XR series (XR13, XR14, XR15, XR16, XR17), XL series (XL15i, XL16i, XL18i, XL20i), and the XV series with variable-speed compressors. The XV20i and XV18 models are the most common high-end units we see in West Palm Beach, especially in older Northwood Hills homes where owners upgraded to handle the August heat. If you’re not sure which series you have, look at the data plate on the outdoor unit’s corner panel. The model number starts with a number like 4TWR or 4TWX, followed by a digit that tells you the SEER rating. Write that number down before you call anyone. It saves a trip.
For parts, we carry both genuine Trane OEM replacements and quality aftermarket equivalents from brands like MARS, Supco, and Packard. The honest difference: Trane OEM parts cost 30 to 60 percent more, and for most repairs, an aftermarket part with the same voltage and microfarad ratings will perform identically. But on variable-speed XV series boards and communicating thermostats, we recommend OEM only. Those systems use proprietary communication protocols, and aftermarket controls sometimes cause fault codes that take hours to sort out. We’ll tell you the price for both options before any work starts, and let you choose.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Trane uses a two-pole contactor on most heat pumps, but some XR units built after 2018 shipped with a single-pole contactor that has a built-in crankcase heater circuit. If a technician installs a generic two-pole contactor on one of those units, the compressor will work, but the crankcase heater won’t, and you’ll lose compressor life. We check the old part before we reach for a replacement. It’s a small thing that separates a repair that lasts from one that doesn’t.
Brandt HVAC Co West Palm Beach is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Trane, but we work on Trane equipment every week.

Signs Your Trane Heat Pump Service Is Failing
- Warm air from the vents in cooling mode. The most common cause is low refrigerant from a slow leak in the evaporator or condenser coil. The second most common cause is a failed run capacitor, which stops the compressor from staying on. If you hear a faint clicking from the outdoor unit followed by a shutoff, that’s the capacitor failing in real time.
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn’t spin. That’s a failed condenser fan motor or a bad capacitor feeding it. Left alone, the compressor will overheat and trip its thermal limit. In West Palm Beach summers, this failure cascade can happen within 48 hours.
- Short cycling. The unit starts, runs for a minute or two, then shuts off and restarts. This is usually a failing contactor, a clogged filter driving up head pressure, or a refrigerant undercharge. Short cycling kills compressors faster than almost anything else, so don’t let it ride.
- Ice on the outdoor coil in summer. That’s a refrigerant undercharge, a failing expansion valve, or a blower that isn’t moving enough air across the indoor coil. Ice on a heat pump in West Palm Beach is never normal. Never.
- A burning smell when the system kicks on. This is often a failed blower motor capacitor or a seized indoor blower motor drawing locked-rotor amps. Cut power to the unit at the breaker and call us. We can still troubleshoot this one, but don’t keep running it.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Trane heat pump repairs typically cost in West Palm Beach:
- Run capacitor replacement: $150 – $275 installed
- Contactor replacement: $150 – $250 installed
- Condenser fan motor replacement: $350 – $600 installed
- Thermostatic expansion valve (TXV): $400 – $650 installed
- Compressor contactor plus capacitor (common combo): $250 – $400 installed
- Refrigerant leak repair and recharge: $150 – $650 depending on leak location and pounds of refrigerant required
The spread comes down to the part’s list price, how many pounds of refrigerant a repair requires, and whether the system needs a replacement part that’s compatible with Trane’s specific wiring configuration. Every quote we give is a written, fixed price before we start. No hourly billing, no “we’ll see how it goes.” You’ll see the number, agree to it, and then we start. Every repair also includes a written guarantee with the work. If the repair fails within the guarantee period, we return at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s automatic, not optional.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check three things before you pick up the phone: change or clean your air filter, confirm the thermostat is set correctly with fresh batteries if it needs them, and check your breakers. That’s it. Past that, Trane heat pumps are not DIY-friendly machines. The outdoor unit contains a capacitor that holds a charge even with the power off. A capacitor discharge across your hand can stop your heart. Refrigerant work is federally regulated and requires EPA certification. And opening a sealed refrigerant circuit without the right tools introduces moisture that destroys the compressor. If the noise is coming from the outdoor unit or the problem involves wiring, refrigerant, or the compressor, call a licensed technician. Call us at (728) 220-0996. We’ll send a background-checked, uniformed technician to your door, and you’ll know their name and see their photo before they arrive.
FAQs
In West Palm Beach’s salt-air environment, expect 8 to 12 years from a Trane compressor, 5 to 8 years from a condenser fan motor, and 3 to 5 years from capacitors and contactors. Coastal corrosion shortens those numbers by about 20 percent compared to inland Florida. If you’re near Flagler Drive or any of the barrier island communities, factor that in. Call us for an inspection and we’ll give you a straight read on what your specific unit has left in it.
No. Capacitors, contactors, fan motors, and expansion valves are sealed component parts that get replaced, not rebuilt. The repair is the replacement. What’s worth knowing is that replacing a $22 contactor today can save you from replacing a $3,500 compressor next summer. Call (728) 220-0996 and we’ll tell you what’s actually wrong before you spend anything.
Most Trane heat pump part replacements take 45 minutes to 2 hours from start to finish. A compressor replacement is the exception, running 4 to 6 hours because the system has to be evacuated, flushed, and recharged. We carry common Trane-compatible parts on the truck, so one trip usually handles it.
We stock Trane-compatible capacitors, contactors, fan motors, thermostats, and defrost controls on our trucks. We also carry common parts for Carrier and Lennox systems, since plenty of West Palm Beach homes have mixed equipment. For variable-speed XV series boards and proprietary communicating controls, we order OEM from our local supply house, usually with next-morning availability. We’ll tell you before you commit whether the part is on the truck or on order.
When your Trane heat pump is down in West Palm Beach, you don’t have weeks to wait. Tell me what it’s doing, and I’ll tell you what it needs. No guesswork, no runaround. Call (728) 220-0996 for a free estimate on Trane heat pump service. A live person answers, 24/7, and we’ll have a technician to you the same day in most cases.
